Bye bye Windows - hello Ubuntu
So, after a long time of complaining about the incredible slowness of my almost five year old desktop computer, I decided to finally get rid of Windows and have a go at installing Linux. As I have had absolutely no experience with Linux before, it was easy to decide on Ubuntu as my flavour. It does seem like the most user-friendly version.
I downloaded the latest version (7.10) and ran the live CD a few times. The problem with the live CD is of course that you run the operating system from the CD which makes it very slow - exactly what I was trying to get away from. I did, however, get an idea about the look and the feel of the working environment and and liked what I saw. I decided to take the plunge and install.
I would have liked to have kept Windows in order to run programs like Photoshop, but although I cleaned up the C-drive and deframgmented it before I tried run the installation, Ubuntu didn’t give me the option to automatically resize the C-drive and keep Windows. I could either partition the drive manually or have Ubuntu format the whole C-drive. As I wasn’t really sure about how to go about the manual partitioning and will probably be buying a laptop in the next few weeks, I thought, what the hell, let’s just wipe the damn C-drive.
I chose the option to install using the entire C-drive and the installation started ok. All of a sudden an error message poped up on my screen saying that there was an error copying the files and that said error is often caused by a faulty optical drive (CD/DVD). Or potentially a a faulty hard-drive. Tried the installation a few times with the same result at different stages of the installation.
As my CD-R drive has died recently and the DVD-drive has begun to make funny noises, I concluded, and hoped (don’t use those drives very often anyway) that it was the DVD-drive that was the problem. There could of course also be a problem with the live CD.
I then decided to order a USB stick with Ubuntu on it and try and boot from the USB and install it from there. I thought, if that doesn’t work, at least I will have a USB stick.
The stick arrived within 48 hours and I tried to boot from the USB, but although I chose the USB stick from the boot menu, the PC was still just trying to boot from the the optical drive. I went into the BIOS (I have a Dell Dimension pc) and unticked the optical drive from the boot sequence. Then tried to boot again. This time it worked.
Half an hour later I had Ubuntu installed.
I will try and write a bit more about the complications I have since experienced. For now I will just this: my computer has come to life again and I can work without tearing out my hair. I like Ubuntu and will also install it on the laptop when I get it.

Name your price
Well, that is what Radiohead decided not to do. And what a stir they have caused - the web is overflowing with reactions to this move. Most people seem to think that it is a brilliant move. Me included.
I will now buy the album. I won’t pay much - I’m skint. But I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise.

Chicken Rasmussen
Anyone following le Tour de France? As a Danish cycling fan it has been a difficult few weeks. Having a Danish guy in the yellow jersey towards the end of the race does not happen often. It hasn’t even been two months since we were stripped of our first and, so far, last victory (yeah, it wasn’t just Bjarne Riis who won the Tour in ‘96, it was the whole damn country - you should’ve seen it!) and for a few days it looked like Michael Rasmussen was gonna replace it. But watching cycling in 2007 feels very different to watching cycling in 1996 - you just don’t know what to believe. I think it was David Millar who said if something looks to good to be true in cycling, it probably is. That can of course be said of many things, but is probably more true in cycling than in many other areas.
When Bjarne Riis won in 1996 I was drinking bubbly with my brother-in-law. Here in Berlin I don’t have any fellow Danes I could share the moment with on Sunday, had he won. I was still gonna have a drink on my own though, although I knew all along that there would be the nagging suspicion in the back of my head cos Mr. Rasmussen certainly has been acting a bit dodgy. Now I don’t need to indulge in schizofrenic celebration on Sunday anymore. Perhaps the one good thing to come out of this.
Might still have that drink though.

Time travel
Yesterday on the U-Bahn (the metro in Berlin) a young guy, early twenties, sat next to me wearing all denim. Stone-washed. White trainers and bleached hair. Vacant eyes and LOUD music on his headphones. Roxette: It Must Have Been Love.
Scary.
